Van
Leer Property
The Van Leer property is located among a series of
other protected Greenway properties on Margaret Mitchell Drive in
Northwest Atlanta. A 100-foot conservation easement along 176 feet
of Peachtree Creek has been placed on this Priority-1 Greenway property
ensuring that the vegetation contained within the easement will
be protected and left undisturbed. The conservation easement is
located entirely within the 100-year floodplain. When preserved
in their natural state, floodplains can function to reduce the severity
of floods through vegetation that acts to slow stormwater runoff
and filter impurities that would otherwise enter the creek. Stormwater
runoff control is especially important in areas with steep slopes
that lead to a river or stream, such as these properties on Margaret
Mitchell Drive. Whether it provides connectivity, improved wildlife
habitat or improved water quality, every greenway property is of
critical importance to the overall mission of the City of Atlanta
Greenway Acquisition Project.
