The Sweetwater Associates property is a noteworthy
purchase for the Greenway Acquisition Project, in terms of protected
acreage and environmental significance. This acquisition was also
purchased as a bargain sale, meaning that it was purchased for less
than fair market value. Bargain sales help stretch the greenway
dollars farther and result in more protected properties. This acquisition
will provide over 3,000 feet of permanent stream bank protection
along Sweetwater Creek, and is also a critical link in the City
of Atlanta's primary goal to acquire continuous greenway corridors.
At nearly 50 acres, this acquisition will also protect several wetlands
on the property. In addition to providing superior wildlife habitat,
wetlands can provide initial treatment of polluted stormwater and
reduce flooding downstream through its storage capacity. When the
velocity of stormwater that flows into the system is reduced, pollutants
are allowed to settle out of the stormwater before continuing downstream.
Whether it provides connectivity, improved wildlife habitat or water
quality, every greenway property has its own unique features to
contribute to the City of Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project.
