Steele
Property
This vacant greenway property was ideal for acquisition
by the City of Atlanta. Although this acquisition is small in acreage,
a tributary to the South River runs through the property. Through
the acquisition of this property, the City of Atlanta will actually
protect both sides of this tributary. Preservation of this property
will also help prevent storm water run-off from flowing into the
stream from surrounding impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces
include: driveways, roads, roofs, and any other surfaces which prevent
water from infiltrating the ground during a rainstorm. When water
flows across these surfaces, it picks up sediment and pollution.
Then, the sediment and pollution flows into the rivers and streams
of the Atlanta region. In highly urbanized areas, such as Atlanta,
this run-off represents a significant source of water pollution.
Therefore, every streamside property that is protected by the Atlanta
Greenway Acquisition Project plays an important role in preventing
water pollution.
