Ringdahl
Property
The Ringdahl property acquisition is particularly exciting
for the City of Atlanta. It is the first acquisition on the Dog
River in Douglas County. The areas surrounding this property are
experiencing residential development pressure as the Atlanta metropolitan
area continues to grow. Therefore, this 28 acre tract will provide
valuable greenspace and habitat protection in Douglas County. The
Ringdahl property acquisition protects 1,630 feet of stream frontage
and is almost entirely located in the floodplain. Since this property
is a protected greenway property, it will be forever maintained
in a natural state. Protection of the floodplain in a natural state
helps prevent flooding by allowing stormwater to infiltrate the
ground slowly instead of rushing into nearby streams. Stormwater
flowing directly into streams at a high volume and velocity also
causes erosion, which is another reason why protection of adjacent
buffer zones is so important. This substantial acquisition is an
example of how property owner participation in the Atlanta Greenway
Acquisition Project results in the protection of the metro area's
valuable water resources.
