Potts
Property
The Greenway Acquisition Project will protect properties
from being developed within 100 feet of rivers and streams. This
will result in improved water quality in Atlanta, including the
Peachtree Creek watershed. The Potts property conservation easement,
located in a residential area on Ridgemore Road in northwest Atlanta,
is a Priority 1 status property. Acquisition of this property will
help protect plant and animal habitats along Peachtree Creek. Stormwater
run-off also poses a significant threat to Peachtree Creek. Often,
stormwater run-off contains a high level of sediment and pollutants.
By infiltrating adjacent greenway areas, these items are allowed
to settle out of the water before entering streams, thus protecting
water quality. Stormwater that flows directly into streams at a
high volume and velocity also causes erosion, which is another reason
why protection of adjacent buffer zones is so important. Therefore,
every property acquired by the City of Atlanta Greenway Acquisition
project is a meaningful contribution to the protection of water
resources of the community.
