Lowery Property
This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. In this acquisition, the City of Atlanta purchased a streamside area that is entirely located within the floodplain. Preserving the floodplain and a vegetated buffer along the stream corridor is important to the health of the aquatic system. A vegetated buffer protects the stream from stormwater run-off by filtering and slowing the flow of water, which prevents erosion and stream bank collapse. Sediment and other pollutants are also allowed to settle out of the water before entering the stream. This acquisition is another example of how residential property owners can preserve water quality in their own neighborhoods.
