Hunter
Property
This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located
in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. This Greenway acquisition
includes protection of the floodplain. Protecting the floodplain
is an important element in protecting the ecosystem of the stream.
It also helps to prevent flooding downstream. A vegetated buffer
and floodplain slows the flow of stormwater into the stream and
allows the water to infiltrate the ground, preventing erosion and
bank collapse. This acquisition also adds to the protected stream
footage along South Utoy Creek. A high percentage of both large
and small property owners in southwest Atlanta have participated
in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project resulting in a connected
corridor of protected streamside buffer areas. A linear protected
streamside corridor creates a more stable habitat for plants and
animals. By participating in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project,
both large and small property owners can work together to preserve
the City of Atlanta's streams.
