This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located entirely within the 100-year floodplain in a residential area of southwest Atlanta. Signs of erosion and sedimentation are currently evident on this segment of South Utoy Creek. In addition to a degraded aquatic habitat, excess soil in the stream could clog drainage ditches and water intakes, and erosion could cause property damage. However, this acquisition will preserve a vegetated buffer in the floodplain and will protect the stream from further flooding by filtering and slowing the flow of water to the stream. This acquisition is another example of how property owner participation in the Greenway Acquisition Project can result in countless benefits to the health of Atlanta's rivers and streams.
