General
Shale Brick Property
The acquisition of this streamside greenway property
is significant for many reasons. It was purchased from the General
Shale Brick company, which is a large manufacturing facility located
in an industrial area of the City of Atlanta. Proctor Creek flows
through this industrial area, and is surrounded by several large
facilities and impervious surfaces. The water flowing from the impervious
surfaces washes sediment and pollution into Proctor Creek. The purchase
of this approximately 28 acre property protecting both sides of
the creek will help to slow the flow of storm water from adjacent
impervious surfaces. Slowing the flow of storm water allows sediment
and pollution to settle out before entering the creek. The successful
acquisition of this property has also resulted in the creation of
a large area of permanently protected greenspace in a part of the
City which is densely developed and has very little greenspace.
