Georgia
Power Property
Corporate interests represent a considerable portion
of the land ownership in the United States. Georgia Power manages
approximately 74,000 acres of land in the state, including approximately
one acre that was recently acquired by the City of Atlanta for the
Greenway Acquisition Project. This acquisition is located along
a tributary to the South River in southwest Atlanta. This area of
southwest Atlanta is experiencing increasing development pressure
as infill projects are constructed on surrounding available vacant
land near downtown Atlanta. However, as a result of this acquisition,
266 feet of stream bank will be preserved as a natural buffer to
protect this tributary. Protecting the stream bank along this tributary
to the South River will not only benefit plants and wildlife habitat,
but also enhance water quality of the South River ecosystem.
