This Priority-1 acquired Greenway property is entirely located within the floodplain of South Utoy Creek in a residential area of southwest Atlanta. Protection of the floodplain is critical for preserving the health of the creek. This conservation easement is comprised of undeveloped floodplain on the streambank which allows stormwater to infiltrate the ground slowly and helps prevent erosion and stream bank collapse. The City of Atlanta has experienced a high level of participation in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project in the Utoy Creek watershed, which has resulted in a large number of protected greenway properties. Connectivity of greenspace is highly desirable from an ecological standpoint. It allows for a greater protection of diverse habitat for both plant and animal species. This acquisition is another example of how residential property owners can have a big impact on preserving water quality.
