Property
The Greenway Acquisition Project will protect properties
from being developed near rivers and streams, which will reduce
the amount of impervious surface (such as concrete or asphalt) in
the watershed. Located in a residential area on Wells Drive in southwest
Atlanta, this Priority 1 status property will protect South Utoy
Creek from pollutants and sediments that wash into the creek from
these impervious surfaces. This acquisition also protects a portion
of the floodplain. Protection of the floodplain is important to
prevent flooding downstream. A wide and undisturbed floodplain allows
water to infiltrate the ground more slowly. This also helps prevent
erosion of the creek banks. A connected series of greenway properties
with a 100-foot wide buffer on the stream ensures the biological
integrity of plant and animal species within the greenway corridor
along South Utoy Creek. Every property acquired by the City of Atlanta
is a meaningful contribution to the protection of water resources
the community.
