Drue
Property
This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located
in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. In this acquisition,
the City of Atlanta purchased a streamside area that is partially
located in the floodplain. A high percentage of both large and small
property owners in southwest Atlanta have participated in the Atlanta
Greenway Acquisition Project which has resulted in a connected corridor
of protected streamside properties. Preserving a vegetated buffer
area and floodplain is important for maintaining the health of the
stream. A vegetated buffer protects the stream from stormwater run-off
by filtering and slowing the flow of water. This helps prevent erosion
and bank collapse. Sediment and other pollutants are also allowed
to settle out of the water before entering the stream. A linear
protected streamside corridor creates a more stable habitat for
plants and animals. This acquisition is another example of how small
property owners can help preserve and improve the water quality
in their neighborhoods.
