The Greenway Acquisition Project will protect properties from being developed near rivers and streams, which will reduce the amount of impervious surface (such as concrete or asphalt) in the watershed. Located in a residential area on Wells Drive, in southwest Atlanta, this Priority 1 status property will protect South Utoy Creek from pollutants and sediments that wash into the creek from these impervious surfaces. This acquisition continues to build on the connectivity of the greenway buffer along South Utoy Creek. A connected series of greenway properties with a 100-foot wide buffer on the stream also ensures the biological integrity of plant and animal species within the greenway corridor along South Utoy Creek. This acquisition is another example of how small property owner participation can add up to big benefits for Atlanta streams.
