Cotton
Property
This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located
in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. In this acquisition,
the City of Atlanta purchased a streamside floodplain area from
a small property owner. Preserving a vegetated buffer area and floodplain
is important for maintaining the health of the stream. A vegetated
buffer protects the stream from stormwater run-off by filtering
and slowing the flow of water. This helps prevent erosion and bank
collapse. A high percentage of both large and small property owners
in southwest Atlanta have participated in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition
Project which has resulted in a connected corridor of protected
streamside properties. A linear protected streamside corridor creates
a more stable habitat for plants and animals. This acquisition is
an example of how small property owner participation in the City
of Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project can result in great benefits
to water quality.
