This Greenway Property is located in a residential area in southwest Atlanta and is entirely located in the floodplain. Protection of the floodplain is critical for preserving the health of South Utoy Creek. A wide undeveloped floodplain on the streambank allows storm water to infiltrate the ground slowly and helps prevent streambank erosion. Both large and small property owners in southwest Atlanta have participated in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project, which has resulted in a connected corridor of protected streamside properties. A protected stream corridor creates a more stable habitat for plants and animals. This acquisition is an example of how property owner participation in the City of Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project can result in great benefits to water quality in the City of Atlanta.
