Bethel
Property
This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located
in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. In this acquisition,
the City of Atlanta purchased a streamside area that is partially
located in the floodplain. Preserving a vegetated buffer area and
floodplain is important for maintaining the health of the stream.
A vegetated buffer protects the stream from stormwater run-off by
filtering and slowing the flow of water. This helps prevent erosion
and bank collapse. Sediment and other pollutants are also allowed
to settle out of the stormwater before entering the stream. This
acquisition continues to build on the amount protected South Utoy
Creek corridor. This acquisition is also another example of how
small property owners can help preserve and improve the water quality
in their neighborhoods.
