Barnes
Property
Landscaping used to entail a manicured lawn that bordered
the water's edge. Although this type of lawn maintenance provides
a pleasing view of the water, it may potentially degrade water quality.
The Greenway Acquisition Project will protect at least a 100-foot
buffer of land from the river or stream bank. Vegetation in the
buffer filters sediments and pollutants through its root system,
and slows the flow of storm water to the river or stream. Instead
of eroding the stream bank, the storm water is allowed to penetrate
into the soil. The acquisition of the Barnes property, located in
a residential area of southwest Atlanta, will protect approximately
135 feet of the stream bank from further erosion and sedimentation
along this segment of South Utoy Creek.
