This Priority-1 acquired Greenway Property is located in a residential area in southwest Atlanta. In this acquisition, the City of Atlanta purchased a streamside area that is partially located in the floodplain. Preserving a vegetated buffer area and floodplain along streambanks is important for maintaining the health of the stream. A vegetated buffer protects the stream from stormwater run-off by filtering and slowing the flow of water. This helps prevent erosion and bank collapse. Sediment and other pollutants are also allowed to settle out of the stormwater before entering the stream. A high percentage of both large and small property owners along South Utoy Creek have participated in the Atlanta Greenway Acquisition Project, thus creating a linear protected corridor. This acquisition continues to build on the amount of protected stream frontage along the creek.
