This greenway acquisition is one of the first on Intrenchment Creek. It is a large acquisition of an entire undeveloped parcel. It also protects a wide floodplain area. A wide, protected, and undeveloped floodplain along streambanks is important for the protection of water quality. Protection of the floodplain helps to slow flow of storm water and the velocity of flow in the creek. It gives the water a place to infiltrate into the ground, thus helping to prevent floodoing and bank erosion. Sediments and pollution that are carried from storm water runoff will also be filtered and allowed to settle out of the storm water before entering the stream.
