Mayor approves ammended ordinance (current ordinance)

Changes to Grease Management Ordinance

On September 10, 2003, Mayor Shirley Franklin signed into effect Ordinance 02-O-2090, to amend the City of Atlanta’s Grease Management Ordinance, Code Section 154-297. Major changes include modifications to the Food Service Wastewater Discharge Permit fee structure and new re-inspection fees.

  • Increase in Annual Permit Fees
Revenues collected under the old fee structure were insufficient to cover the expenditures of the Grease Management Program. A new, revenue neutral fee structure is required to fully recoup the City’s implementation cost. Under the new ordinance, the permit fee will be $300 per every 5 traps. Facilities that do not have a grease trap will be charged the $300 minimum for the Food Service Wastewater Discharge Permit.

    New Fee Structure:

    Number of Traps Permit Fee
    0-5 $300.00
    6-10 $600.00
    11-15 $900.00
    16-20 $1200.00
    21-25 $1500.00
    26-30 $1800.00
    31-35 $2100.00
    36-40 $2400.00

  • Re-Inspection Fees for Non-compliance
A re-inspection fee of $100.00 for each grease trap shall be charged for any facility that fails a grease trap inspection. This fee is in addition to fines that may be imposed by Municipal Court for other violations.

    Public Notice
The Commissioner of Watershed Management may publish in the local newspaper names of permittees convicted of any violation of the Grease Management Ordinance.

    Maintenance Requirements
Maintenance requirements will not change under the amended ordinance.
    Pumping requirements remain as follows:
    • 14-day interval for an inside trap
    • 90-day interval for an outside trap
    • Or, as required by the Inspector to comply with the 25% Rule
How to Avoid a Grease Emergency
    • Do not pour your grease, gravy or meat broth down the sink, floor drains or toilets.
    • Do not follow greasy waste with warm water, detergent or other chemicals --- this will "melt" the grease, allowing it to coat pipes.
    • Don't throw fruit pulp, vegetable trimmings, poultry skins and other stringy, fibrous material into the disposal. Your machine can't grind these items adequately. These items belong in the TRASH.
    • Turn on the cold water at least 15 seconds before you turn on the disposal, and keep it running briefly afterward.
